Storm Gudrun isolated Björkö – ferry and fishing came to a halt

December 18, 2025

Introduction

It is rare for ferry traffic to and from Bohus-Björkö to be cancelled, but during a particularly powerful storm on January 5, 2005, the winds became so strong that the yellow ferry was forced to stop operating. The day quickly became memorable for many people on the island.

The ferry stopped by the wind

Wind speeds increased rapidly during the morning, with gusts reaching levels that made the crossing unsafe. The decision to pause ferry traffic was taken early, and travelers had to remain at home until conditions improved. Seeing the ferry standing still at the terminal was unusual — something that only happens in extreme weather.

Objects flying through the air

The storm was clearly felt across the island. Roof tiles were torn loose and other objects were blown from buildings. Many residents chose to stay indoors, and fishing activities were suspended.

A day still remembered

No one was injured, but the event became one of the few occasions when Björkö was temporarily isolated from the mainland. Storm Gudrun remains a topic that many still talk about today.
